GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is an All-India based examination organised and conducted by IISc, Bangalore and seven other IIT’s in eight zones across India on behalf of the National Coordinating Board (NCB), Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD). GATE Exam is conducted for admissions in Masters in Technology (M.Tech), Master of Engineering (ME), and direct PhD programs with financial aid. All top level educational institutions like Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other state level institutes/universities accept GATE scores. Some of the internationally famous institutions in Singapore and Germany are also accepting GATE score for admission in post-graduate programs in many disciplines.
GATE is conducted by the Indian Institute for Science, Bangalore (IISC Bangalore) and the seven old IITs (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee) rotationally. Every institute gets the chance after 8 years. In the following table names of the organizing institutes from 1995 to 2022 are mentioned.
