Today India produces around 1.5 million or 15 Lakh engineers every year, which is more than the US and China combined and fortunately or unfortunately you are one of them. As AICTE says that Lakhs of engineers in India are struggling to get placed in an extremely challenging market. And there are real chances that 20% - 35% of these students graduating out of India’s engineering colleges run the risk of not getting a job. So it is evident to find out a way to stand out from the crowd in the race of getting the jobs and qualifying GATE exam can give the students that edge over other students.
The objective of the GATE exam is to test the comprehensive understanding of the students in different graduate-level subjects. Thus the GATE score comparatively assesses the performance of the student in that particular subject. The GATE exam score has a wide range of acceptance in national as well as in international level. For admission in master degree programs / direct admission to PhD program / selection in many PSUs, it has become mandatory to obtain a good GATE score. The opportunities that will be available to students through a good GATE score are given in this blog.
Students can pursue master degree programs / PhD programs with financial support from the top colleges of India including 23 IITs, 31 NITs, and other top-level colleges like IISc Bangalore, IIITs, BITS Pilani and VIT Vellore with their GATE scores. Students can accomplish their dreams of getting excellent jobs in reputed companies like Google, Amazon, Face book, and Microsoft in engineering or research profile with high salary packages by taking admissions in top institutions. A Minimum financial support of Rs.12,400/- per month is given to regular students joining colleges under MHRD. In a test / interview based selection process, a minimum of 70% weightage should be given to the GATE score and the remaining will be given to the candidate’s performance in test/interview and/or academic record according to the MoE guidelines.
Some top ranked (within 100) foreign institutes like National University of Singapore (NSU), The Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Technical University of Munich (TUM) and RWTH Aachen accept GATE scores (90 percentile or more GATE score) mainly in the following disciplines.
• School of Computer Engineering
• School of Civil and Environmental Engineering
• School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering
• School of Materials Science and Engineering
• School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
• School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering
• Faculty of Engineering
• Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
• Faculty of Civil Engineering and Surveying
• Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
• Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Computer Engineering
• Software Systems Engineering

The doctoral programme offered by NITIE, which is equivalent to PhD, can be accessed through GATE. Full time regular candidates those who will qualify for the financial assistance receives Rs. 25,000/- per month during 1st and 2nd year of the program and Rs. 28,000/- per month during 3rd, 4th and 5th year of the program according to the MHRD guidelines.
Many Public Sector Units (PSU) like NTPC, BHEL, BSNL, ONGC, GAIL, HPCL, PGCIL, HPCL, DRDO, NHPC, BARC, etc. prefer to conduct their selection process based on GATE score. Depending on the qualification, experience, skills and GATE score one can expect to get a job in PSUs.
If a student prepare for GATE, then the preparation of other exams like ESE, CII-iPATE, SSC CGL, BARC, ISRO, DRDO, NTPC, ONGC, CIL etc. can be covered at the same time.
